"Instead of a behavior plan, they just suspend him."
A formal suspension is easy to count. A call asking a parent to pick up a child, a shortened day, or a send-home that never appears in the discipline record can be harder to track. Federal guidance recognizes that informal removals may still be disciplinary removals depending on the facts. Book a $29 overview with Stephanie Wynn to review the pattern.
Count Every Removal
Record:
- The date, start time, and return time.
- Who requested the child leave and what reason was given.
- Whether instruction or services were missed.
- Whether the removal appears in attendance or discipline records.
- The cumulative number of removed school days.
Ask What the Behavior Is Communicating
An FBA examines the frequency, duration, intensity, antecedents, consequences, settings, and other relevant information connected to behavior. The purpose is not to excuse behavior. It is to identify why it occurs and design supports that teach safer, more effective skills.
Stephanie Wynn's Recommendation
After every pickup call, send an email confirming the time your child was removed, who requested it, the reason given, and the instruction or services missed. Ask the school to correct any attendance record that does not reflect what happened.
When removals accumulate, timing matters. Ask whether IDEA discipline protections, a manifestation determination, an FBA, a behavior intervention plan, or an IEP meeting is required. Reserve your $29 first-client overview to prepare the timeline.
