Ten principles that separate prepared parents from frustrated ones, the rights, records, and requests every Nevada family should understand before the 2026-27 IEP year begins.

A new school year can feel like a fresh start, but for parents of children with IEPs or 504 Plans in Nevada, it also brings a long list of meetings, decisions, and conversations that can go sideways fast. Most of the problems I'm called in to fix don't start with a bad school team, they start with a parent who didn't know what they were allowed to ask for. These ten principles are the foundation of the Wynn Method of Advocacy™, and they apply whether your child is in CCSD, Washoe County, a charter school, or a rural Nevada district. 10 Things Every Nevada Parent Should Know

What follows are the short versions. The free Fast Guide PDF expands each one with the exact wording to use in an email, what to ask the school team, and the documentation to keep afterward.

    The non-negotiables for parent advocacy:

    • The IEP is a living document. If it isn't working, you can request a meeting to revise it at any time.
    • You are an equal member of the IEP team. Your input about your child's strengths and needs must be considered.
    • Written notice matters. Verbal promises from the school should be followed up with an email summary.
    • Drafts are not final. You have the right to review a draft IEP before the meeting and request changes.
    • Related services must be provided. Speech, OT, PT, counseling, and other services cannot be skipped without proper notice.
    • Accommodations follow your child. A 504 Plan or IEP accommodations should be used in every setting, including testing.
    • Transition planning starts at 16. In Nevada, make sure your teen's IEP includes measurable post-secondary goals.
    • ESY is not summer school. It is based on regression and recoupment data, not convenience.
    • Discipline has special rules. A Manifestation Determination Review (MDR) is required when certain behaviors lead to suspension.
    • You can bring support. An advocate, friend, or family member can attend the IEP meeting with you.

Knowing Your Rights Is Only Half the Job

The parents who get the best outcomes are not necessarily the loudest in the room. They are the most prepared. They keep a calendar, organize their records, and document every conversation. Principles tell you what to ask for; the calendar tells you when. Pair this list with the month-by-month IEP dates and deadlines for the 2026-27 school year so nothing sneaks up on you.

    Wynn Advocacy Pro Tip

Pick one principle a month and put it into practice. By December you'll have a documentation habit that changes how the school team responds to you.

    Final Thought

The 2026-27 school year will bring challenges, but it will also bring opportunities if you walk in prepared. Keep these ten principles close and remember that your voice is the most important one at the table. When you're ready for personalized guidance, Wynn Advocacy is here to help Nevada families turn confusion into clarity.
